Property Description
This mostly wooded property on the eastern fringe of the Tug Hill Plateau offers a wide range of four-season recreational opportunities both on the property and nearby. The internal trail system on the property is well suited for hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing and ATV use for both younger and ‘very old’ riders. Off-property trails (favorites for everyone else) include the Lewis County ATV trails found on the adjacent, year-round Mackay Road and the Snowmobile Main Corridor Trail, accessed via a short ride down the adjacent Higby Road.
An open field, old barn, stone foundations and farming relics adjacent to the Mackay Road are evidence of the farm homestead that once occupied the site years ago. An uninhabitable mobile home and storage trailer, with no water or septic, is found at the end of the long driveway in the north central part of the property. It is a great location with a view where one might choose to build a house or seasonal cabin warmed by a cozy wood stove and powered by your favorite choice of off-grid energy sources as there are no electric utilities available roadside.
There is a rich mix of tree species present including; hard and soft maple, cherry, beech, birch, ash, aspen, hemlock, spruce, fir and pine. Cow pastures, now overgrown with hawthorns, apple trees and briars, combined with a forest thinning, ten years past, provide food and mast that attracts deer, bear, turkey, grouse, snowshoe rabbits, a variety of songbirds and other critters to the area. The traditional use of the property for the last half century has been hunting. Gently rolling best describes the terrain.
The property is located in a unique recreational area just minutes away from the13,793-acre NYS Lesser Wilderness State Forest. With snow in excess of 300 inches per year there are endless opportunities for year-round outdoor activities. Other popular recreational destinations nearby include a 10-minute drive to the Snow Ridge Ski Center in Turin, a 15-minute drive to Whetstone Gulf State Park for camping, swimming and hiking and the Black River for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Grocery and department stores in Lowville and Rome are but 30 minutes away.
